The beginning of September always feels like the start of a new year. As we approach September, I’m excited for our upcoming Confirmations. As members of our church family have prepared for confirmation it’s been an opportunity to reflect on what we as a church are all about.

I found myself returning to the core values we have as a church. When we started shaping these we spoke about church life in three dimensions- UP, IN & OUT. Each of these dimensions are expressed in different ways at St Andrew’s:

UP to God through worship & prayer

IN with one another through discipleship & community.

OUT to the world through mission & service.

You don’t have to look far in the stories of Jesus to find these values expressed. Jesus often spend time alone and with others in prayer and worship . One of his first public acts was a gather 12 close friends to journey through life with and teach and demonstrate God ways. Jesus also served others and shared this Good News with those both near and far, likely and unexpected. People were healed restored, forgiven, renewed and welcomed into a life transforming relationship with the Father. As we celebrate with those being Confirmed on the 15th September and enter this new term let us continue to keep these values at the heart of who we are as a church family.

I’d love to draw your attention to 3 ways these values are being expressed at St Andrew’s:

New monthly worship & prayer nights (launching on Thursday 10th October)- First and foremost we are worshippers of God, this is our highest priority and what we were created to be. Jesus says that the first commandment is to love God with all our hearts, minds and soul. Jesus loved to be in his Father’s presence- he carved out time to seek God in prayer and taught his disciples to pray and do the same.

Our heart is that these monthly evenings will become an opportunity to seek God’s presence together. To worship and pray for God’s kingdom to come. As Laity begins the second year of her internship here at St Andrew’s, she will be taking responsibility for these evenings. Even if this might be a new experience for you, I’d encourage to be part of this journey.

Midweek Lifegroups- God never intended that we would live out our worship and relationship with him alone. Community and family have always been part of God’s plan for us. Our midweek Lifegroups are an opportunity to be part of a close knit community and grow together through exploring the bible and bringing our questions, wonderings, joys & doubts. These groups offer a place of friendship and support for one another. Our Monday groups meets during the afternoon for those who are around in the daytime and our Thursday group meets in the evening either near Highgate or in Crouch End. This groups is likely to multiply this term, allowing more options for those who are around in the evening. You can find out more about our Lifegroups on the noticeboard in the Hall or speak to me if you’d like to join either of these groups.

The Alpha Course- Maybe you still feel new to faith or have particular questions. It could be that you have friends or family in this position. Jesus shared this Good News with others in life-giving and generous ways. The Alpha course is a great way for people to explore faith together in a friendly environment. It begins in October and runs for 7 weeks. It’s the perfect place to explore how life and faith meet. I’ll be hosting the course so do speak to me if you are interested or you can sign up online or via invites at church.
